The working Group on Digital Retinal system (IEEE 3161 working Group) was formally established in March 2022, with Wang Yaowei, director of the Institute of Visual Intelligence of Pengcheng Laboratory as chairman, and Professor Zhu Wenwu of Tsinghua University and Ji Wen, researcher of Institute of Computing, Chinese Academy of Sciences as vice chairman. The members of the working group are composed of first-class universities and scientific research institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University and Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as a number of domestic leading enterprises such as Huawei, Hisense, Haikang, Yuntianlifei and Tencent. The working group is committed to the formulation of a series of technical standards for the digital retina, defining the reference architecture, functional requirements, communication flow, communication protocol, interface, cooperation mechanism and other contents of the digital retina system.

After a year of hard work and unremitting efforts of the members of the IEEE 3161 working group, the digital retinal system standard IEEE 3161-2022 has been officially released.

According to reports, as the first end-edge cloud collaboration system standard at home and abroad, the reference architecture, technical characteristics and functional requirements of the digital retina system are defined, which lays a foundation for the establishment of a complete, scientific and reasonable digital retina standard system. The digital retina system constructs a new paradigm of visual computing system with the core characteristics of "real-time convergence of features, video on-demand call, and model online update". It realizes the real-time analysis and processing of visual big data and solves the resource bottlenecks of traditional visual system in bandwidth, computing, storage and so on.

With three groups of core features as enabling technology, video stream, feature stream and model flow are transmitted and processed in parallel on the end-edge-cloud platform, thus forming a more efficient visual perception computing system and building an intelligent "discerning eye". It can be applied in smart city, intelligent transportation, intelligent manufacturing and other industries.
