Epic demonstration Unreal engine 5.2 Preview: introduction of Substrate material framework to harness dense jungle scenes
CTOnews.com March 24, Epic Game demonstrated the unreal engine 5.2 preview at the recent game developer conference. This update mainly introduces the Substrate material framework and a set of program content generation tools.
The Unreal engine 5.2 preview demo begins with a sunlit jungle scene, which is a very challenging scene for graphic rendering. The Nanite virtual geometry system of the Unreal engine is not suitable for leaves at first, but it is gradually enhanced later, and can be deformed and moved according to the interaction in the game world.
It also shows a Rivian electric truck shuttling through the rainforest environment. Epic says all the physical interactions here have been realistically modeled, ranging from rocks tumbling under truck tires and splashes. CTOnews.com learned from the report that the truck data was provided to Epic by Rivian, and the model is said to have 71 million polygons.
The Rivian truck is mainly used to demonstrate the Substrate material framework. This is a change to the existing material system, which can simulate multiple layers of materials, or even on the same surface.
The presenter changed the painted metal surface of Rivian's body to a material that simulates opal gems and has subsurface refraction that really changes as the camera moves around.
