Apple says traditional digital pedometers rely mainly on accelerometers to determine whether the user has taken a step, but the natural swing of the arm may also change it, resulting in inaccurate steps.

Apple wants the Apple Watch to connect to a variety of fitness devices, such as treadmills, to provide more accurate fitness data. The method may also include obtaining the first machine data from the fitness machine. The first machine data can specify the type of fitness machine.

In one example, Apple says the treadmill calculates mileage based on motor operation, not on accelerometers, so it can better track distance and calories consumed.

CTOnews.com also learned from the patent that Apple hopes to provide corresponding exercise courses and better fitness data through the connection between the Apple Watch and various fitness equipment such as treadmills and rowing machines.
