CTOnews.com, March 30 (Xinhua)-- after the European Union and India, Canada is drafting new rules to establish universal charging standards for smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras and other devices by 2023.

Canada recently released a 2023 Budget [PDF] report, which was translated into CTOnews.com as follows:

The federal government will take the lead in working with a number of international partners and other stakeholders to explore the implementation of standard charging ports in Canada with the aim of reducing costs for Canadians and reducing e-waste.

Over the past decade, manufacturers have developed a variety of chargers for mobile phones, tablets, cameras, laptops and other devices. Every time Canadians buy new equipment, they need to buy new chargers to match them, which drives up costs and increases e-waste.

The USB-C port is not explicitly selected as the general charging standard in the report. The European Union issued new rules at the end of last year requiring all new phones sold in the region to be recharged using the USB-C port by December 28, 2024.

The new EU rule forces Apple to switch to USB-C ports in its iPhone 15 series, but it will still require accessories to comply with MFi certification.
