CTOnews.com, March 30 (Reuters)-the European Union reached a political agreement on Thursday on its ambitious goal of expanding the use of renewable energy by 2030, a key step in tackling climate change and abandoning Russia's fossil fuel plan.

The agreement calls for an 11.7% reduction in final energy consumption across the European Union by 2030, which lawmakers say will help combat climate change and reduce Europe's use of Russian fossil fuels.

In addition, European Parliament member Marcus Piper tweeted that EU countries and the European Parliament agreed that by 2030, 42.5% of the energy in the 27 member states of the European Union will come from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy, compared with 32% at present.

To achieve this goal, countries need to renovate millions of leaky buildings to reduce energy waste. Since most European buildings are heated by fossil fuels, this policy is crucial to the EU's response to climate change.

Negotiators agreed that by 2030, end-users in the region, such as households and factories, should consume 11.7% less energy than expected. But the deal fell short of the 13 per cent target set by the European Commission last year to help countries get rid of Russian fossil fuels more quickly.

As far as CTOnews.com understands, the goal will be legally binding. Countries will set their own non-mandatory national targets, but if they do not add up to meet the 11.7 per cent target, the European Commission will amend them.

From 2024 to 2030, countries must reduce their final energy consumption by an average of 1.49% per year. Countries must also speed up the renovation of public buildings, at least 3% of the total area of public buildings each year.

The agreement will be submitted to the European Parliament and EU countries for a final vote, which is usually a formal procedure without any changes to the agreement.
