Volkswagen will stop production of the fuel version of the golf model, but will retain the name for future electric models
CTOnews.com April 2 news, Volkswagen on March 16 launched less than 25000 euros (CTOnews.com note: currently about 184,000 yuan) Volkswagen ID.2 all concept car, and plans to launch 10 new electric vehicle models by 2026.
Volkswagen ID.2 all positioning pure electric A-class hatchback, based on Volkswagen MEB Entry precursor platform, will be launched in Europe in 2025. At that time, many media interpreted it as a pure electric golf model.
Volkswagen brand head Thomas Schaefer told Automobilwoche that Volkswagen does not intend to develop a new generation of internal combustion engine versions of its legendary Golf model, marking the end of the 1974 series and the brand's determination on the road to new energy transition.
He said the Golf 8, currently in production, would be the last internal-combustion version of the hatchback, with a series of updates expected next year. Schaefer said the automaker plans to keep the Golf name in future electric models, but could launch as early as 2028.
"That way, the car can go all the way to 2030. Then we have to see how this segment develops. If the world turns out differently by 2026 or 2027, we may develop a whole new vehicle, but I don't think so, at least not so far. "
The Volkswagen brand, owned by Volkswagen Group, aims to have 80% of models sold in Europe and 55% of electric vehicles sold in North America by 2030, while the group aims to reach 50% of global electric vehicle sales by then, although it seems difficult.
