CTOnews.com, April 5 (Xinhua)-- Amazon has made massive layoffs in its video games division, affecting about 100 employees at Prime Gaming, Game Growth and the company's studio in San Diego, Bloomberg reported.

Christoph Hartmann, vice president of Amazon Games, wrote in a memo to employees on Tuesday: "our resources will be consistent with our focus on content. In the future, we will continue to invest in our internal development work, and our team will continue to grow as our project progresses."

The job cuts are part of a broader layoff plan by Amazon, which plans to cut about 9000 employees worldwide. Amazon's gaming division has faced challenges over the past few years, with a number of games canceled or postponed, including New World and King of Crusaders.

In spite of this, Amazon still has confidence in the game business and has made a number of agreements with external partners. Amazon, for example, has struck a deal with NCSOFT to bring Thrones and Freedom, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, to North America, South America, Europe and Japan. Amazon has also reached an agreement with Crystal Dynamics to develop and release the next work of the classic game series Tomb Raider.

Amazon has also launched its own cloud gaming service, Luna, which allows users to easily play games on their existing devices without waiting for a long download. According to CTOnews.com, Luna is still in the testing phase and requires an invitation to use it.
