CTOnews.com, April 18, Proton is a compatibility layer developed by the V Society that allows Windows games to run on Linux. It is a collection of software that extends the popular API translation layer Wine to provide high performance and low overhead Vulkan API.

Proton version 8.0 has now been released, and according to Pierre-Loup Griffais of the V News Agency, the latest version 8.0 is the biggest update to date. Supports some games, such as "Forspoken" or "Dead Space: remaking". This version requires GPU to support Vulkan 1.3, but it is not a problem for most current users (click here to see the supported version of your graphics card).

By far, the biggest use of Proton is the Steam Deck handset, which uses a custom SteamOS system based on Linux. For Steam Deck users, at least 3000 games are now supported through Proton.
