CTOnews.com April 18, Google announced today that it will begin to provide Matter protocol support for the Nest Thermostat smart thermostat model to be released in 2020. This means that the smart thermostat can be controlled through Apple Home home applications and Siri on iPhone and other devices.

Google said in a blog post that Matter support will be pushed to Nest Thermostat through automatic OTA updates starting today and will be completed in the next few weeks.

CTOnews.com Note: Matter is a general smart home protocol standard that supports smart home platforms such as Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and so on. This means that after the upgrade, Nest will finally be able to support Apple HomeKit.

Google said that in the Home app, users can adjust the Nest Thermostat temperature, change the thermostat mode, and so on. The Verge noted that iPhone users need to update to iOS 16.4 or later to use this feature.

According to The Verge, Google is "exploring" adding Matter support to the original Nest Learning Thermostat model, but it is still not compatible with Apple's HomeKit.
