During Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Russia in March 2023, Russia returned 1.5g of scientific lunar samples to China.

The lunar samples given by China to France and Russia come from drilling samples and watch samples obtained by China's Chang'e-5 mission from the lunar frontal storm ocean northeast Skyship base in December 2020. The lunar samples returned by Russia to China come from samples drilled by the Soviet Lunar-16 mission before 1970.

In December 2020, China's National Space Administration issued the measures for the Administration of Lunar samples, encouraging lunar sample research and promoting the sharing of scientific achievements. So far, scientists from Australia, Russia, France, the United States, Britain and Sweden have participated in the scientific research of Chinese lunar samples.
