It is reported that 60% of Apple's screen supply in the next few years will still come from South Korean companies such as Samsung and LG.

CTOnews.com, April 26 (Xinhua)-- although Apple hopes to increase control over product design and promote independent research and development of various components, Apple will still rely on South Korean suppliers, research and development and mass production of device screens in the foreseeable future, according to South Korean media The Korea Herald.

The Korea Institute of Information and Communications Technology (IITP) said Apple is testing and using self-designed chips and screens on iPhone models, but this is mainly strategic to maintain its market dominance.

IITP said 60 per cent of Apple's screen components would be purchased from South Korean screen suppliers such as Samsung Display and LG Display over the next few years.

IITP believes it may take a while for Apple to fully commercialize its homemade display technology. Watch panels using microLED technology are expected to cost much more than current smartwatch panels, so the US technology company is likely to use the technology after 2025.

CTOnews.com previously reported that Ross Young, chief executive of screen supply chain consultancy DSCC, tweeted that microLED screens customized by Apple for the subsequent Apple Watch would be produced by LG.

Young said in a tweet that LG Display is building a small production line to provide Apple with microLED screens. Apple is expected to switch to microLED screens in its Apple Watch in the spring of 2025.

Young said LG Display will begin mass production in the second half of 2024 to supply Apple with microLED panels and assemble Apple Watch screen components for Apple.
