CTOnews.com, April 26 (Xinhua)-- OpenAI's popular ChatGPT is a chat robot based on "generated pre-training converter" (CTOnews.com Note: Generative Pre-trained Transformer) technology, which is referred to as "GPT" for short. With the continuous heating up of AI competition, OpenAI recently applied for the trademark of "GPT" to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), but was rejected.

According to TechCrunch, OpenAI submitted an application for the trademark of "GPT" to USPTO in December last year, hoping to obtain the exclusive right to use the acronym as soon as possible. This may be due to the recent emergence of a number of competitors who mimic GPT technology, including Elon Musk's planned chat robot called "TruthGPT". However, OpenAI's request for acceleration was not approved by USPTO, which formally rejected OpenAI's application last week.

Jefferson Scher, an intellectual property lawyer, said OpenAI may have to wait another five months to know the result of the application. He also pointed out that OpenAI may eventually get the trademark "GPT", although the T stands for "Transformer" is the name of a neural network released by Google in 2017.
