CTOnews.com April 27, Sun Microsystems released the Java programming language in 1995. With its portability, interactivity and many other features, it is still favored by developers 28 years after it was launched.

According to the 2023 Java ecosystem report released by New Relic, developer adoption of Java 17 increased by 430% one year after its launch. Java 14 is the most popular non-LTS version.

According to the contents of the report, CTOnews.com briefly summarizes as follows:

Java specifies a long-term support (LTS) version every 2-3 years, which pushes quarterly stability, security, and performance updates, but does not introduce new features.

In a production environment, 56 per cent of application development currently uses Java 11 (up from 48 per cent in 2022 and 11 per cent in 2020) and 33 per cent uses Java 8 (down from 46 per cent in 2022).

Although Java 11 has topped the list for the second year in a row, the adoption rate of Java 17 is rapidly catching up. More than 9 per cent of applications now use Java 17 in production (up from less than 1 per cent in 2022), representing a growth rate of 430 per cent in one year.

Amazon has replaced Oracle as the most popular supplier of Java development kits (JDK). Oracle had about 75 per cent of the Java market in 2020.

Although Oracle retained the top spot with a 34% share in 2022, it fell to 28% by 2023. Amazon's market share has soared to 31% (up from 2.18% in 2020 and 22% in 2022).
