Beijing, May 4 (Xinhua) Chinese companies have submitted more patent applications related to charging and changing electricity for electric vehicles than their competitors in any other country, and have made great progress in key technologies to make the charging experience faster and more convenient, according to a report released by Tokyo patent analysis company Patent Result.

Between 2010 and 2022, Chinese companies filed 41011 patent applications in these areas, the report said. Although there are not many Chinese companies at the top, the number of Chinese participants in this field makes them submit about 50% more applications than Japanese companies. Japanese companies ranked second with 26962 patents. Germany ranked third with 16340 patents, the United States ranked fourth with 14325, and South Korea ranked fifth with 11281.

Many Chinese companies seem to be focused on faster charging times, a key step in promoting the popularity of electric vehicles. Of the patents they have filed, 17 per cent relate to fast charging technology and 10 per cent to battery replacement technology, far higher than 1 to 3 per cent of Japanese, German and US carmakers. Other focus areas for Chinese companies include the design and control of charging stations, power transmission and wireless charging.

"the rapid maturity of the electric car market in China has led to increased competition among companies," said Hiroto Suzuki Suzuki, managing partner of the Tokyo office of Arthur D. Little, a consultancy. "the convenience of charging has become an important way to distinguish between different models."
