CTOnews.com, May 6 (Xinhua)-- the Open Media Alliance (AOMedia) was founded in 2015 and developed an open source, royalty-free video coding format, AV1, in 2018, with the goal of solving the high patent fees and complex patent licensing issues of H265.

AV1 is slowly gaining popularity, with YouTube supporting it in 2018, Netflix supporting it in 2020, and Apple adding support for AV1 in 2022.

AOMedia has not stopped moving forward and has begun to add support for subsequent AV2 codecs. However, this support is still in the experimental stage and is related to AVIF (AV1 image file format).

AOMedia merged an PR request yesterday, which CTOnews.com translated as follows:

This is experimental. The AV2 specification has not yet been finalized.

Libavif can generate AV2 files only if AVIF_CODEC_AVM is set to ON.

AvifEncoder API can export AV2 files only if codecChoice is explicitly set to AVIF_CODEC_CHOICE_AVM.

Avifenc can only output AV2 files when-- codec=avm is specified to avoid errors.

AOM and AVM conflict and cannot be used together in the same libavif binary. Other AV1 codecs can be enabled with aom.

Libavif decodes any AV1 or AV2 file by default as long as the relevant codec is enabled.
