Last month, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reiterated that the periscope lens will achieve up to 5x to 6x optical zoom when taking photos with the rear camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max can achieve up to 3x zoom. When taking photos, optical zoom doesn't blur like digital zoom when zoomed in.

Pexels uses a periscope lens where the light absorbed by the image sensor bends or "folds," allowing greater distances between camera elements in the compact design of the smartphone. This technology allows enhanced optical zoom and is already used by some Android branded phones such as Samsung, Google and Huawei, with phones such as the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra offering optical zoom from 5x to 10x.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 15 series of phones in September, including the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and other upcoming models include the iPhone 15 Standard, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro, which are not expected to feature a periscope lens.
