CTOnews.com May 10 news, Canonical and Intel recently jointly launched a new Chromium snap version for video encoding / decoding to achieve hardware acceleration.

Compared with the official version, this custom version has more robust performance when encoding / decoding VP8, VP9 and H.264 video, and provides better battery life performance.

CTOnews.com Note: this custom version of Chromium needs to be run on Intel 7 generation Kaby Lake and newer processors.

The customized version of Chromium is still in the "Beta" testing phase and is not ready for widespread launch.

If Ubuntu users do not currently have Chromium snap installed, they can continue to use the hwacc channel to install a hardware-accelerated Chromium beta:

Snap install chromium-channel=latest/candidate/hwacc if you already have Chromium snap installed, you need to switch to the hwacc channel. You can do this by running the following command:

Snap refresh chromium-- channel=latest/candidate/hwacc if you want to switch back to the Chromium snap version without hardware acceleration, you can execute the following command:

Snap refresh chromium-- channel=latest/stableGitHub address:
