After AVIF, Microsoft confirms that the latest version of the Win11 photo application supports WebP format.
CTOnews.com May 18, Microsoft Senior Project Manager Jennifer Gentleman confirmed that Windows 11 has ushered in a new photo app that supports WebP image format.
Earlier this month, Microsoft released a new photo app on Dev and Canary, version 2023.11050.2013.0, which brings a number of new features, although details have not yet been released, but support for WebP is undoubtedly one of them.
CTOnews.com tried using files from Google's Webp library and found that these WebP images loaded perfectly on 2023.11050.5007.0.
Out of curiosity, we also tested two AVIF images in Link-U 's GitHub repository and found that both 10bit and 8bit image samples were displayed normally, but could not load the 10bit YUV444 file (with slightly higher color precision), indicating that "the current format is not supported".
Of course, the classic Windows photo viewer can also open Webp files with the Webp image extension installed, but the app is based on WIC. This is a plug-in technology in the Windows Vista era, so it will affect the current Windows shell performance, stability, and security.
