CTOnews.com, May 22 (Xinhua)-- Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, was fined $1.3 billion by the European Union for violating privacy for transmitting user data to the United States, the highest fine ever imposed by the European Union for privacy violations, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The ruling is based on the General data Protection regulations (GDPR) implemented by the European Union in 2018, which sets out the principles and obligations that companies must abide by when dealing with the personal data of European citizens. According to GDPR, companies that violate data protection rules can be fined up to 4 per cent of their annual global revenues.

EU regulators have given Meta six months to suspend the transmission of data from European Facebook users to the United States and delete data already in the United States, Bloomberg reported. It is reported that the decision does not apply directly to Instagram and WhatsApp.
