European Union officials said Tuesday that Thierry Breton, EU industry director, will meet Sam Altman, CEO of U.S. artificial intelligence research company OpenAI, in San Francisco next month to discuss how the company implements the EU's global leading rules on artificial intelligence.

The EU officials said Breton would also discuss with Altman an AI agreement aimed at bringing OpenAI into an organization of European and non-European companies to apply AI rules ahead of their implementation in 2026.

Altman angered Breton last week when he said he would quit Europe if the company had trouble complying with upcoming EU AI laws.

In response, bretton, who set the new rules, said they were not negotiable.

"Bretton will discuss the practical aspects of implementing the AI Act. It will be a working session and there will be an in-depth discussion of the data,"an EU official said.

After meeting Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai last week, Bretton said the US tech giant and the European Commission would discuss a voluntary agreement on AI to help companies adapt ahead of time to the implementation of AI legislation.
