Romania launched an antitrust investigation against Sony after forcing players to buy digital games in the PS store.
CTOnews.com May 31, according to foreign media PlayStation LifeStyle reported that the Romanian Competition Commission (RCC) has launched an antitrust investigation against Sony, accusing it of forcing players to buy digital games in the PS store.
RCC believes that Sony's move may have violated Romanian competition law. The agency further believes that Sony's ban on other distributors from selling digital games is suspected of "abusing its dominant position in the game console market".
RCC said Sony's actions reduced the choice of players to buy games, allowing it to charge higher prices for games. At the same time, it will also prevent Romanian studios from developing PS games. According to public information, Sony's PS console is very popular in Romania, with about 1.3 million console players and 127game studios being affected by Sony's possible violation of competition law.
In the field of console games, Sony is the only console manufacturer that does not allow digital games to be sold through third parties. CTOnews.com learned from an official press release that RCC also said it had inspected Sony's offices in Europe to gather more information and evidence. But RCC did not say how long the entire investigation process would take.
