TSMC: it is evaluating the second chip factory in Japan, which is still dominated by mature processes in Kumamoto.

Chairman Liu Deyin said that he is currently evaluating the establishment of a second plant, which will be located in Kumamoto, focusing on mature processes, and there are no plans to introduce advanced processes.
TSMC held a regular meeting of shareholders today. in an interview after the meeting, Liu Deyin said that at present, the land bought by TSMC is only for the first factory, while the land for the second plant is still under expropriation, and the site is still in Kumamoto. As many customers feel that TSMC's mature process capacity is insufficient, the second plant in Japan will be evaluated in the direction of mature process, and there is no plan to introduce advanced process.
Japanese media reported in February that TSMC plans to build a second chip manufacturing plant in Kiyang-cho, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, with an investment expected to exceed 1 trillion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 50.9 billion yuan).
Last year, TSMC invested about $7 billion with Sony Group to build a semiconductor factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, while Japan decided to provide a subsidy of 476 billion yen (currently about 24.228 billion yuan) to the factory.

The plant is operated by Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), a foundry service subsidiary of Kumamoto Prefecture, and is invested by Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Toyota Motor Group and Denso.
It is said that the new plant, which is the same or larger as the first plant, may introduce advanced 5-10nm technology (the Kumamoto plant, scheduled to start production at the end of 2024, will be responsible for the production of 22/28nm and 12/16nm process chips with a monthly capacity of 55,000 chips) and is expected to start operating after 2025. The company emphasizes the ability of the two factories to share human resources and equipment and plans to decide on the details by 2023.
