CTOnews.com, June 12 (Xinhua) Jeff Bezos, the world's third richest man, did a strange thing two weeks ago: he bought a share of Amazon at a price of $114.77 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 818 yuan).

This is the first recorded purchase of Amazon stock by Bezos since 2002, according to a document. The Amazon founder is better known for selling Amazon shares. Since 2002, he has sold about $30 billion worth of shares to fund his pursuits, from rocket company Blue Origin to personal enjoyment, such as his new $500m superyacht, Koru.

After Amazon's initial public offering in 1997, Bezos received no more stock compensation and only a small salary. He still owns about 10 per cent of the company, which accounts for most of his $148 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The stock purchase on May 25th increased his wealth by about $10 as Amazon's shares were boosted by a broader rebound in technology stocks and the S & P 500 entered a bull market this week.

Mr. Bezos's move baffled Amazon analysts and stock watchers, and social media was rife with speculation that Mr. Bezos planned to use the physical certificate of one share as a gift. others joked that he must have accidentally clicked the Buy button on his account.

A representative of Amazon and Bezos declined to comment on the stock purchase.
