Netflix is in talks to host a brand new celebrity-driven golf tournament in Las Vegas that will also include sports stars from other fields, sources said.

Although negotiations are still in the early stages, this customized, star-driven golf tournament makes sense as Netflix's first foray into sports streaming. Webcasting sporting events is risky and expensive, following reports that Netflix tried unsuccessfully to wrest the rights from ESPN.

Netflix's own live-streaming service doesn't have a very good reputation either. In April, Netflix encountered a major failure in an entertainment live broadcast. The live broadcast originally scheduled to start at 8 p.m. was delayed until 9:30 p.m. due to a failure, and Netflix finally announced the cancellation of the live broadcast.

It is worth mentioning that CTOnews.com previously reported that Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, said in December last year: "We haven't seen a profit model for buying live broadcast rights for major sports events." He also stressed that Netflix had been able to increase its online video membership even without buying live broadcast rights for major sports events.
