But while the headset comes with multiple cameras, Apple says Vision Pro doesn't open access to those cameras to third-party apps, unlike the iPhone and iPad.

Vision Pro developers explained this at a conference on how to optimize existing apps for visionOS: "Vision Pro returns different values than iPad and iPhone when apps request microphone and camera use. When requesting a microphone, the application can only get one microphone in the front position. When requesting cameras, the app finds two cameras. The rear camera returns a black camera screen with a disable symbol, which is a non-functional camera used to support applications that assume the rear camera is available. When a front-facing camera is requested, the app finds a single synthetic camera. If no spatialized personas are found on the device, the app cannot capture any camera images. "

In short, Vision Pro's outward camera permissions are locked. Introverted cameras can be useful--as long as you create an avatar to represent yourself. That's how FaceTime works, because it's impossible to point it at yourself when you're wearing a headset.

Apple's inability to access the camera for third-party apps is not surprising, as the Vision Pro is Apple's first such product, and Apple usually only gradually opens up parts of its hardware and software as the product matures, because Apple needs to take time to ensure that opening up hardware permissions does not compromise user privacy.

Of course, Apple still allows users to take stereoscopic photos and videos through the camera app on visionOS, and CTOnews.com notes that the headset even has a dedicated hardware button to take photos and videos.
