Toyota's future electric vehicles will provide analog manual gearboxes, which will stall if they are not operated properly.
CTOnews.com, June 15 (Xinhua) if you like cars with manual gears, but want to switch to electric cars, Toyota's future electric cars may be right for you. Starting in 2026, the Japanese carmaker will add an analog manual gearbox to its electric vehicles, combining the traditional manual driving experience with electric vehicles.
In announcing the plan, Yukio Kato, president of Toyota's electric vehicle plant, said Toyota planned to bring a "surprise" experience to drivers of its electric vehicles. The simulated manual transmission will include a variety of functions to help create the feeling that the driver is driving an internal combustion engine with a clutch, including gear shifts and engine sound. In addition, the system will provide a feature that many manual drivers are familiar with when the clutch is not operated properly, but a Toyota spokesman told the Wall Street Journal that this feature may not appear in the final mass-produced models.
Toyota had set a target of selling 1.5 million electric vehicles by 2026 and an additional 2 million by 2030.
CTOnews.com notes that other carmakers, including Dodge and Hyundai, also plan to introduce analog manual gearboxes into their electric vehicles. Koenigsegg, a Swedish company, has developed a nine-speed, seven-clutch gearbox that mimics a six-speed gearbox.
