Tesla wire steering system patent exposure: steering wheel and wheel do not need mechanical connection, only rely on electrical signals to complete control

CTOnews.com June 19 news, Tesla has recently applied for a new by-wire steering system patent. Based on the traditional steering, the system cancels the mechanical intermediate shaft, transmits the driver's steering intention and makes road information feedback through electrical signals. It is reported that the system is expected to improve driving efficiency and provide a better steering experience.

CTOnews.com noted that Tesla was in the component team in Austin, Texas, USA as early as 2020 to develop a steering-by-wire system. Subsequently, Musk confirmed in 2021 that Tesla "is indeed studying the on-line progressive steering system, but it is still a few years before it is put into use." Tesla applied for a patent, indicating that the on-line steering system is not far from the actual mass production.

Steering wheel torque feedback actuator assembly with two controllers

Front wheel steering actuator assembly with two zonal isolated motors and controllers

Two separate power components

Two independent vehicle communication networks

In a steering system, three dedicated system communication networks between each node

Tesla described that redundant components are isolated by zones, so even if one or more components fail, it will not endanger the security of the system. This design will also allow redundancy without the need for a mechanical steering system.
