CTOnews.com June 26, Microsoft today released the latest free Windows 11 virtual machine to help developers create applications. The version number of Windows Development Environment (Windows Development Environment,WDE) has been updated to 2306, which can be downloaded free of charge from the official website.

WDE is a set of virtual machines that do not need to be activated and can be used for 90 days for free. Its main purpose is to provide developers with various tools needed to create Windows applications, including the following:

Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with workloads such as USP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and Windows App SDK for C# enabled.

The Windows subsystem Linux 2 is enabled and Ubuntu is installed and pinned to the taskbar.

Installed the Windows terminal.

Windows developer mode is enabled.

According to CTOnews.com, WDE 2306 is based on Windows 11 Enterprise SKU. The version number is 22621.1848, which is the latest version in the stable channel. 22621.1848 is also known as "Moment 3" update. It is worth noting that Microsoft is gradually introducing the function of "Moment 3". Therefore, these new features are turned off by default in the updated virtual machine, but users can enable them through the appropriate switch in the Windows update settings.

Windows 11 Development Environment version 2306 is valid until September 13, 2023. Microsoft points out that these virtual machines cannot be activated. Developers and enthusiasts can download the latest Windows 11 Development Environment virtual machine for free from the Microsoft developer website, and the available configurations include VMWare (workstations and players), Hyper-V II, VirtualBox and Parallels (unfortunately, there is no ARM version of the project). Note that you need at least 70GB free disk space and at least 8GB memory.
