CTOnews.com July 3, people familiar with the matter told Reuters that after discussion with Microsoft and no agreement on remedial measures, the European Commission, the EU's antitrust regulator, may launch a formal investigation into the company to resolve the problem of Office office suite bundling Teams applications.

▲ source Microsoft added the office messaging application Teams to Office 365 for free in 2017, which eventually replaced Skype for Business. Teams's competitor, Salesforce's Slack, complained to the European Commission in 2020 that Microsoft was suspected of unfairly integrating Teams into its Office products.

In response, Microsoft has proposed a remedy to the European Commission, that is, to launch a version of Office that does not contain Teams applications and reduce the price of the version. Sources said that the European Commission has been seeking more drastic price cuts, as the two sides have not agreed on the matter, the EU may formally open an antitrust investigation into the company in the coming months.

Over the past decade, Microsoft has been fined 2.2 billion euros (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 17.402 billion yuan) for violating EU antitrust provisions. On the Teams incident, a Microsoft spokesman said: "We will continue to cooperate with the European Commission in the investigation. Microsoft is open to practical solutions to address EU concerns and provide good services to customers."

EU executives declined to comment.
