CTOnews.com, July 5 (Xinhua)-- Monday, July 3, set a new record, making it the hottest day on Earth's reliable record, according to the latest data released by the National Center for Environmental Prediction.

In many Chinese cities, temperatures exceeded 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) on July 3, and temperatures in North Africa were close to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).

Antarctica also experienced unusually high temperatures in winter, with 8.7C (47.6F) near the Antarctic research base Warnadsky Research Station (Vernadsky Research Base), breaking the July temperature record.

CTOnews.com quoted climate researcher Leon Simons as saying:

For the first time since we have reliable records, the global average surface temperature has reached 17 degrees Celsius, an important symbolic milestone in our warming world.

Affected by the El Ni ñ o phenomenon, it is expected that temperature records will continue to be set around the world in the next year and a half.
