Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, July 9 (Xinhua)-- according to a new survey, technology executives are under tremendous pressure. Half of the executives admitted to drinking, and 45% took painkillers.
The survey, commissioned by Censuswide by All Points North, an addiction treatment center in Colorado, surveyed 501 executives working at technology companies with at least 1000 employees. The survey was conducted from April 27 to May 15, 2023, entitled "Mental Health report of the Technology Industry in 2023".
The survey results show that there are high rates of alcohol or alcohol dependence, drug use and abuse, and poor mental health among technology executives. Many technology executives are also worried about their career prospects, not knowing whether they can keep their jobs. CTOnews.com noted the recent upheaval in Silicon Valley and the technology industry, and fears of massive layoffs and recession have unnerved executives. At the same time, advances in artificial intelligence have made some executives feel that their positions are in jeopardy, according to the survey. According to the report, 77% of executives said the layoffs had a negative impact on their mental health, and 74% worried that the development of artificial intelligence would cost them their jobs.
In addition to long-term worries about unemployment, some technology executives have also encountered difficulties in their daily work. Long hours and high stress have led to drug abuse among executives, with 45% of executives taking painkillers such as codeine, oxytocin and Vicodin, according to the survey. The use of stimulants and sleeping pills is also common, accounting for 34% and 35%, respectively. In addition to controlled drugs, technology executives also drank heavily, with half of APN respondents describing themselves as alcoholics, that is, drinking three to seven alcoholic drinks a day, and 51 per cent had smoked cigarettes or nicotine e-cigarettes in the past three months.
During the outbreak, the number of CEO leaving due to burnout remained high, and the CEO turnover rate rose to 29% in the first quarter of 2022, a high rate that continued in 2023. According to APN, 1/3 of technology industry C-level executives say they are looking for a new job.
