CTOnews.com July 11 news, TSMC has set up a factory in Kumamoto, Japan, and is expected to produce in 2024. Liu Deyin, chairman of the board, said that the second plant is being evaluated and will be built in Kumamoto, which is still dominated by mature processes.

TSMC plans to build a second plant in Kumamoto prefecture in Japan from April next year and hopes to start production by the end of 2026, according to the Daily Industry News.

According to reports, the second factory will mainly produce 12nm chips, and the size of the plant will be roughly the same as the first factory being built in cooperation with Sony Group and Denso.

Japanese media reported in February that TSMC plans to build a second chip manufacturing plant in Kiyang-cho, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, with an investment expected to exceed 1 trillion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 50.9 billion yuan).

Last year, TSMC invested about $7 billion with Sony Group to build a semiconductor factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, while Japan decided to provide a subsidy of 476 billion yen (currently about 24.228 billion yuan) to the factory.

Tuyuan Pexels at present, TSMC's first plant in Kumamoto has begun construction and aims to start production in 2024. The plant is operated by Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), a foundry service subsidiary of Kumamoto Prefecture, and is invested by Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Toyota Motor Group and Denso.

According to the plan, the Kumamoto plant, which is scheduled to start production by the end of 2024, will be responsible for the production of 22/28nm and 12/16nm process chips, with a monthly production capacity of 55,000, and the second plant is not expected to be much worse. The company emphasizes the ability of the two factories to share human resources and equipment and plans to decide on the details by 2023.
