CTOnews.com, July 22 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- Google has been hoping that Apple will add support for rich communications solutions (RCS), but now the company has turned its attention to the message layer security (MLS) protocol, hoping to put pressure on Apple to change iMessage by increasing cross-platform interaction.

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) recently released the MLS protocol, which not only enables actual interoperability across platforms and services, but also has enough flexibility to help providers address user privacy and security threats while supporting end-to-end encryption.

Google said in a press release a few days ago that it would integrate the MLS protocol in Google Messages and Android systems.

CTOnews.com also learned from the press release that Google also wants regulators to step up regulation of the interoperability of large end-to-end messaging platforms, referring in particular to the EU's digital market bill, which will require iMessage to interoperate with other messaging platforms.

Google says this interoperability requires open, industry-reviewed standards, especially in the areas of privacy, security and end-to-end encryption, otherwise end-to-end encrypted group messaging and other advanced functions cannot be achieved.
