Thank CTOnews.com netizens soft media Xinyou 1933769 for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, July 28 (Xinhua)-- US smartphone shipments fell 24% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023, the third consecutive quarter of negative growth, according to a report released by Counterpoint Research today.

▲ Touyuan Counterpoint website reported that shipments of Android phones in the United States fell 38% in the second quarter compared with the same period last year, with Samsung, Motorola and TCL- Alcatel having the biggest decline. Although Apple's shipments also fell 6%, it still achieved an increase in its share of shipments, with its market share rising to 55% from 45% in the same period last year.

Analyst Matthew Orf said US consumer demand for smartphones was lacklustre in the second quarter, with a decline in summer sales coming ahead of schedule. Despite the decline in inflation data in the quarter and the continued strength of the job market, consumers are hesitant to upgrade their equipment amid uncertainty. Orf expects this trend to continue into the third quarter of 2023, but remains optimistic about the upcoming iPhone 15.

Despite the decline in overall shipments, some segments of the US smartphone market showed important signs of picking up this quarter. Maurice Klaehne, a senior research analyst, said the collapsible market reached an important milestone in the quarter. Motorola, Google and Samsung have all launched their own collapsible devices, and shipments of foldable phones in the third quarter are likely to reach the highest level ever in the United States, as Samsung launches new Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices.

Hanish Bhatia, deputy research director, pointed out that although Apple's shipments fell 6% compared with the same period last year, the share of shipments increased by 10%, and this flexibility is driven by strong promotions of post-paid and prepaid. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile continue to offer promotional credits above $800 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 5728 yuan) for iPhone 14, while the older generation of iPhone is also heavily discounted in prepaid activities.
