Hyundai Motor cooperates with Seoul National University in South Korea to develop cutting-edge battery technology.
CTOnews.com July 30 news, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Zheng Yixuan revealed that they have worked with well-known scholars and experts in the domestic battery industry to develop breakthrough technologies in the battery field, which will strengthen the research on next-generation batteries, especially solid-state and lithium-metal batteries.
On July 25, Hyundai Motor Group announced the establishment of a "Hyundai Motor Group-Seoul National University Battery Joint Research Center" at the Photochemical Campus of Seoul National University.
Since the establishment of cooperation with Seoul National University in November 2021, the company has successfully built a three-story (901 square meter) research facility, which is the first facility dedicated to electric vehicle battery research at Seoul National University.
According to reports, its battery joint research center adopts a four-department system, focusing on lithium metal battery, solid-state battery, battery management system (BMS) and battery manufacturing technology.
The goal of the research center is to develop next-generation batteries, especially lithium metal and solid-state batteries. The CTOnews.com query found that 14 of a total of 22 joint research projects were directly related to lithium metals and solid-state batteries.
In addition, its research also includes the analysis of the elements and shapes of lithium electrolyte materials to minimize the degradation of lithium metal batteries. For solid-state batteries, the research covers sulfide-based cathode materials, electrode and electrolyte coating methods, and the derivation of high energy density anode materials.
These research projects come from 21 professors, researchers and doctoral students from a number of universities in South Korea, including Seoul National University, Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology, Ulsan National University of Science and Technology, Daegu Qingbei Institute of Science and Technology, Hanyang University, Seung Kwan University and Chung Nam National University.
Hyundai Motor plans to integrate the technology successfully developed by the Joint Research Center into its mass production process, and plans to invest more than 30 trillion won (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 168 billion yuan) in the research center in about seven years (by 2030).
