Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 1 (Xinhua)-- the safety officer of the Uber self-driving car pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years' probation after the world's first fatal collision involving a self-driving car was finally sentenced, foreign media Insider reported.
CTOnews.com learned that the accident occurred in 2018, when Uber was testing its self-driving car in Tempe, Arizona, USA. Rafaela Vasque worked as a safety guard (driver) in the car test program. Prosecutors described Rafaela Vasque as the vehicle's "eyes and ears", but because of the security officer's "dereliction of duty", he broadcast the TV program "The Voice" on his mobile phone during the autopilot test. As a result, he failed to notice the road conditions and eventually resulted in the death of a 49-year-old woman, Elaine Herzberg.
▲ Tuyuan Insider investigators said that before the car hit the Elaine Herzberg, the sensor had already warned, but did not trigger the automatic brake, while the driver Rafaela Vasqu was addicted to the TV program and did not brake until the reaction came, but it was too late.
The accident caused some controversy, and it was widely believed that both the driver and the self-driving company were responsible for Elaine Herzberg's death, but the Arizona attorney's office ruled in 2019 that Uber would not face criminal charges for the accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board investigated Uber later that year and highlighted a series of safety problems with the company. The committee said that Uber's "inadequate security risk assessment procedures" and excessive trust in security officers, while security officers were not doing their job, eventually led to the tragedy.
Uber stopped the autopilot test immediately after the accident. Due to widespread public criticism, the company chose to suspend its self-driving business indefinitely and hand over its self-driving results to Alphabet's Waymo self-driving partnership, which is currently providing self-driving car travel services in Phoenix.
