Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 12 (Xinhua)-- the California Institute of Technology filed a document with the US federal court on Thursday that it is expected to reach a "potential settlement" with Apple and Broadcom over patents for data transmission in Wi-Fi chips, according to Reuters.
The incident dates back to 2016, when the California Institute of Technology filed an indictment in federal court in Los Angeles, formally suing Apple and Broadcom.
Caltech believes that millions of iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and other devices that use Broadcom's WiFi chips infringe the university's data transmission patents.
Apple is a major buyer of Broadcom chips, and the two sides reached a $15 billion chip supply agreement in January 2020, which will end in 2023. Broadcom estimates that 20% of its revenue comes from apple.
In 2020, the court ordered Apple and Broadcom to pay $837.8 million and $270.2 million in patent infringement damages to Caltech, totaling $1.1 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 7.953 billion yuan).
In 2022, however, a US appeals court overturned the ruling and ordered a retrial of the issue of damages, arguing that the original award was "legally unsupported".
The trial, originally scheduled to begin in June 2023, was postponed indefinitely in May this year.
Caltech made it clear in a document submitted on Aug. 10 that Broadcom had signed a settlement agreement, and it remains to be seen whether Apple will decide to settle.
According to the report, all parties requested a joint status report by Friday, August 18. Reuters tried to contact Apple, Broadcom and Caltech, all of which declined to comment.
