CTOnews.com, August 16 (Xinhua) Google plans to train 20,000 women and young people in digital skills in Nigeria and provide financial support of 1.2 billion naira (CTOnews.com) to help the government create 1 million digital jobs in the country, Google's African executives said on Tuesday.

In a meeting with Google's African executives in Abuja, Kasim Shetima, vice president of Tuyuan Pexels Nigeria, said Nigeria planned to provide digital jobs for many of its young people, and Shetima did not provide a timetable for creating these jobs. Google Africa executives said Google's philanthropic department would work with data Science Nigeria and the African Creative Industries Initiative to provide financial and technical support to implement the plan.

Shatima says Google's initiative is in line with the government's commitment to increase the participation of young people in the digital economy. The government is also working with the country's banks to promote the project. Google will invest money and provide digital skills to women and young people in Nigeria and help start-ups develop to create jobs, said Olumid Balogon, Google's regional director for West Africa. Charles Murito, Google's director of government relations and public policy in Africa, said at the conference that Google is committed to investing in digital infrastructure in Africa and believes that digital transformation can be a driving force for employment.
