The co-founder of PayPal angrily criticized Musk for "playing dirty tricks", saying that he "didn't say he was sick until he got married".

In 2000, Musk's online finance company X.com merged with security software company Confinity. The company eventually became PayPal, and Musk's struggle for control of PayPal triggered a series of infamous "office politics" and later became "Silicon Valley legends."

Hoffman compared the merger to marriage and said Musk was acting like "someone hiding a physical illness from his spouse until he got married."
