Foreign media said that Qualcomm's deal with Autotalks is designed to support Qualcomm's business focused on "V2X", which aims to allow vehicles to communicate with their surroundings.

In addition to the US FTC, the European Commission has previously announced that it will conduct an in-depth review of the deal, foreign media said that Qualcomm must obtain the approval of EU antitrust agencies to complete the deal.

In an effort to allay potential concerns about the deal, Qualcomm, in announcing its acquisition of Autotalks, stressed that the deal was supported by carmakers and parts makers, including Volkswagen, General Motors, Renault, Continental and Samsung's Harman International. However, the deal was also opposed by anonymous complainants, with foreign media saying that one of the complainants was the chipmaker MediaTek.

Nakul Duggal, senior vice president of Qualcomm Automotive, has previously said: "We have been investing in the research, development and deployment of V2X since 2017 and believe that as the automotive market matures, an independent V2X safety architecture will be needed to improve the safety of road users and intelligent transportation systems."

Qualcomm said last year that its car business had grown to $30 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 207.3 billion yuan), an increase of more than $10 billion since the end of July.
