Tape storage is a mature technology that is rarely used by ordinary consumers, but because it can store large amounts of data on relatively small media, it is a long-term backup solution for many organizations, and companies like IBM have been developing this technology.

This week, IBM took another step in this area. The company's new TS1170 drives can store 50TB uncompressed data on each cassette, using new JF media. With a compression ratio of 3:1, the capacity can be expanded to 150TB. This technology increases the capacity of the previous generation of TS1160 drives and JE media by 250%, which is 20TB uncompressed and 60TB compressed.

In addition, TS1170 has a native data transfer rate of 400 MB/s and up to 900 MB/s when processing compressed data. There are two types of new drives for IBM: the Model 70F has a dual-port 16-Gb fibre Channel interface, and the Model 70S has a dual-port 12-Gb SAS interface. The Model 70F also supports stand-alone installation through traditional fiber host accessory interfaces for cloud-based and open computing settings. In addition, the 3U form factor rack mount kit makes the Model 70F compatible with most 19-inch racks and can be mounted from the front or rear without a tool. The device supports IBM's TS4500 tape library and complies with the RoHS-3 standard.

CTOnews.com notes that other features of TS1170 include speed matching, high-resolution tape catalog, channel calibration, dynamic adaptive equalization, capacity expansion, WORM storage (multiple reads per write), data compression, and so on. Encryption is implemented through the IBM Security key Lifecycle Manager and can be managed by libraries or applications.

However, due to the change of the new cartridge format, TS1170 is not compatible with E or D cartridges used by previous generations of drives. In addition, the drive currently does not support connecting to IBM TS7700, and TS1170 can only be used by one system at a time.
