According to news on the evening of August 30, Beijing time, United Arab Emirates artificial intelligence research company G42, Mohamed Ben Zayed artificial Intelligence University (MBZUAI) and California artificial intelligence company Cerebras today jointly released the Arabic artificial intelligence big language model Jais, which is known as the highest quality Arabic artificial intelligence software in the world.

The Jais large language model is an open source bilingual model trained based on huge Arabic and English language data and can be used by more than 400 million Arabic speakers around the world.

The move is also part of an effort by the United Arab Emirates to lead generative artificial intelligence in the Gulf. Prior to the release of Jais, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia had been buying large quantities of high-performance Nvidia chips needed for artificial intelligence software. At present, the whole world is scrambling to buy Nvidia chips to promote the development of artificial intelligence.

Prior to this, the State-owned Institute of technological Innovation (TII) of the United Arab Emirates in the city of Masdar, Abu Dhabi, had developed a large open source language model, Falcon, using more than 300 Nvidia chips.

Earlier this year, Cerebras signed a $100m deal to supply the G42 with nine supercomputers, one of the largest contracts of its kind by potential rivals.

"the UAE has always been a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence and this time we want to take the lead," said CEO Andrew Jackson of Inception, an AI application research unit in G42. "We think this is a global competition. At present, most big language models are dominated by English. But there is no denying that Arabic is one of the largest languages in the world, so why can't we have a big language model?"

But the UAE's ambitions in artificial intelligence have also raised concerns that the technology could be abused. In fact, today's most advanced large language models, including ChatGPT GPT-4 that supports OpenAI, Google PaLM that supports Bard chatbots, and LLaMA, the open source model of Meta, have the potential to be abused.
