Japan's Rapidus plans to build a cutting-edge fab by 2027 and mass produce 2nm chips by 2028.

It is understood that Rapidus is an one-year-old company that plans to install chip equipment and start trial production in December 2024, with the goal of mass production of 2nm chips within 4 years (2028 at the latest). Tetsuro Higashi, chairman of Rapidus, said the goal was "daunting but feasible" with the support of overseas partners and domestic equipment manufacturers.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Rapidus's soon-to-be-built plant was attended by about 130 people, including executives from chip equipment makers such as ASML Holding NV in the Netherlands and Lam Research Corp in Fremont, California.

The government of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has promised billions of dollars in subsidies to boost domestic chip production.
