CTOnews.com Sept. 13, research firm TrendForce said today that the market penetration of foldable smartphones is expected to be 1.6% in 2023 and could exceed 5% by 2027.

▲ Galaxy Z Fold5, Samsung official website, according to the agency's estimate, shipments of folding screen smartphones will soar to 18.3 million in 2023, up 43% from a year earlier. However, this accounts for only 1.6% of the total smartphone market this year. By 2024, shipments of folding screen smartphones will grow 38 per cent year-on-year, reaching 25.2 million units and a market share of 2.2 per cent.

In the medium to long term, TrendForce believes the expansion of the foldable smartphone market is inevitable, with shipments likely to soar to 70 million units by 2027, accounting for about 5 per cent of the global smartphone market.

▲ Huawei Mate X5, TrendForce, the official website of Huawei, believes that as the cost of components falls, especially the cost of panels and hinges, the price of foldable phones may fall below the threshold of $1000 (CTOnews.com Note: about 7300 yuan currently), a shift that is expected to stimulate consumer interest and willingness to buy.

TrendForce expects the share of folding screens for each brand this year:

Samsung accounts for 68% of shipments of 12.5 million units, compared with 82% of the brand last year

Huawei ranks second with about 2.5 million units shipped, with a 14 per cent share.

OPPO occupies 5% share

Xiaomi has 4% share.

Other brands are less than 4%.
