CTOnews.com, September 14 (Xinhua)-- Applied science students from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and the University of Lucerne recently broke the world record for electric vehicle acceleration with a single-seater convertible called mythen, a feat that has been recognized by Guinness World Records.

The students, from the Motor Sports Club (AMZ) of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, spent about a year developing a car that could accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 0.9 seconds, or 0.956 seconds to be exact, breaking the world record of 1.461 seconds set by the team at the University of Stuttgart in September 2022 and using a distance of just 12.3m.

A spokesman for AMZ said mythen was no longer legally on the road because of its "changes in compliance with Formula one rules".

Students are reported to have developed the 309lb car, which includes a printed circuit board, chassis and batteries. They use lightweight carbon and aluminum honeycomb structures and a self-developed four-wheel hub motor with an output of 326 horsepower, making the mythen's power-to-weight ratio more than one horsepower per pound.

The size of the car's battery is unknown, but it is said to be about 1/3 of the average Formula one electric car, and its mileage is unknown.

Dario Messerli, head of aerodynamics, said: "Power is not the only important factor in setting acceleration records-effectively transferring power to the ground is also the key." The single-seater is not equipped with front and rear wings similar to that of a Formula one car. Instead, the team "developed a device similar to a vacuum cleaner that holds the vehicle to the ground by suction."

The electric vehicle acceleration world record is a highly competitive field, with the AMZ team and the University of Stuttgart team setting the record alternately many times.
