CTOnews.com Sept. 26, EU internal market commissioner Thierry Thierry Breton today urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to open up Apple's hardware and software ecosystem to competitors.

"under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the next step for Apple and other large technology companies is to open their doors to competitors," Bretton made the comments after meeting Cook in Brussels, Reuters reported.

"whether it's an e-wallet, a browser or an app store, consumers using Apple's iPhone should be able to get competitive services from multiple providers," he said. "

Bretton also refuted Apple's previous argument that security and privacy issues were the reason for its closed ecosystem, saying: "EU regulations promote innovation without compromising security and privacy."

According to the Digital Market Act, Apple will not be forced to bundle software, lock in a closed environment, or restrict users to use only their own app stores. The European Union requires Apple to complete the overhaul by March 6, 2024.
