CTOnews.com, September 28 (Xinhua)-- Jibang Consulting, which tracks car sales in 37 markets around the world, reported that 5.55 million cars were sold in August, up 1% from the previous month.

The report believes that the reason for the moderate growth is that automakers will launch new models this autumn, whether waiting for new models or price cuts for existing models, many consumers are taking a wait-and-see attitude and expect growth to begin in September this year.

Toyota, Volkswagen and Honda remained in the top three of the top 10 best-selling brands in August, while BYD overtook Ford to become the fourth best-selling brand in the world.

CTOnews.com note: BYD's car sales rose 5% month-on-month in august, trailing Honda, which ranked third in market share, by just 0.1%.

Japanese carmakers rely mainly on demand from regional markets such as Southeast Asia to boost their car sales, and the key for BYD to catch up with Honda is to accelerate its overseas expansion.

Ford's sales in Europe and the United states shrank in august, falling 6.7% from a month earlier to sixth place.
