Based on Volkswagen's SSP platform, Audi executives hinted that they were planning an R8 electric sports car.

CTOnews.com, September 30 (Xinhua)-- Oliver Hoffman (Oliver Hoffmann), who is in charge of Audi technology development, recently hinted that the third generation electric R8 sports car will be launched in the future, which will be based on Volkswagen's upcoming Extensible system platform (SSP).

CTOnews.com note: Audi launched the R8 E-Tron in 2015, but sold less than 100 vehicles; in 2018, it demonstrated the vision of high-performance electric vehicles, below is the PB18 E-Tron, but unfortunately it is not mass-produced.

Audi plans to stop producing fuel models in 2025 and to be fully electric by 2026, and one of the key drivers of change is the SSP platform, which is expected to be based on 80 per cent of Volkswagen's models in the future.

Hoffman did not provide many details, but confirmed that a new R8 sports car has been developed internally.

But Audi has other priorities before R8 hits the road. The company will first launch the Q6 E-Tron in 2024, which is based on an architecture shared with Porsche and is called Premium Platform Electric (PPE).

Audi's brother Porsche is also developing a high-performance electric car codenamed K1. The electric SUV, scheduled to be launched later this decade, aims to redefine performance and luxury interiors. Porsche's Mission X concept car also heralds the electric supercar of the future.
