The CVE-2023-42824 vulnerability lies in the XNU vulnerability, which allows local attackers to escalate their privileges. In this update, Apple also fixed a zero-day vulnerability in CVE-2023-5217 caused by a heap buffer overflow in the VP8 encoding of the open source libvpx video codec library, which could be exploited by an attacker to execute arbitrary code.

CVE-2023-42824 is the 17th zero-day vulnerability exploited by Apple since the beginning of this year.

Apple also closed the iOS 16.6.1, iOS 17 and iOS 17.0.1 authentication channels today for security and other reasons, which means that users who have upgraded to the new version of the system can no longer be downgraded to the above version.
