Ultra HDR is the way Android phones record and read HDR photos, and the files are in standard JPEG format, so they are also backward compatible with SDR (standard dynamic range) displays.

Adobe Lightroom has added new HDR support in Android version 9.0.0 and is currently available on Pixel 7, 7 Pro and 7A phones running Android 14. When you open the option to import HDR photos in the settings, when you import a Ultra HDR image for editing, you will see a new HDR icon in the upper right corner, and clicking on it will show a histogram with additional HDR highlights. If you are using a device that does not support this feature, this part of the histogram will be shown in red.

According to CTOnews.com, in addition to a HDR display is needed to view HDR images, applications like Instagram also need to support HDR images. Apps like Instagram remove the image's metadata when users upload pictures, so they can only see SDR images. Currently, Adobe recommends exporting images to AVIF format, which is supported by Google's Chrome browser.
